What an FIR is
A First Information Report records the first information a police station receives about a cognizable offence. It sets the investigation in motion.
If an FIR names you
- Obtain a copy — you are generally entitled to one.
- Note the sections and the police station.
- Speak to an advocate before responding, so your rights are protected.
This is general information, not legal advice. A verified criminal advocate can advise on the facts of your matter.
